1st, I want to use this season to build my bike fitness and improve on my ability to sustain a lot of riding. At Ironman CDA I got off the bike without enough fitness to run through the marathon. I am not making the same mistake this year. I am going to work hard on the bike so I set myself up for a solid IM marathon.
2nd, I am going to work on my nutrition and experiment with new fueling strategies. At Ironman CDA I was gelled out and bloated beyond belief while running. This year, I plan to do some longer workouts in the spring to test a different fueling plan. I look forward to practicing in the REV 3 Quassy Half, but I am also going to plan a few big days of training to experiment with different race safe foods. Also, I am going to apply many of the nutrition lessons learned from last year to avoid bad episodes in training. I don't plan to ever do a long workout under fueled again, and I am going to improve on my daily nutrition intake!
3rd, I am going to race a bit more this season. Nothing keeps you motivated like a race and last year I worked hard up until July and then chilled out for several months. I also didn't get enough races in and I think more races will help me prepare a little better. This year I am going to do an olympic and a half prior to the Ironman. I am also going to put a September 1/2 IM on the schedule and keep working after IMUSA.
4th, I want to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Several years ago I thought marathoning was ridiculous, but after finishing two last year, I think I can use the fitness accumulated to qualify Boston. I think it would be really cool to run in that race and I want to put in a solid marathon at some point this fall so I can race Boston in the future.
Finally, I plan to improve my Ironman performance by quite a bit. I want to finish IMUSA in the 11-12 hour range and I look forward to the work to do so.
So there are my athletic new years resolutions. Here's to the new year!
